Renewable electricity across our sites

At Heidelberg Materials Australia (HMA), sustainability and operational excellence go hand in hand including in how we purchase the energy that powers our sites.

Our Procurement team has completed a major electricity tender covering 125 sites with lower individual electricity consumption across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory.

Responsible procurement supporting sustainability
While each of these sites has relatively small individual energy consumption, collectively they represent a significant portion of Heidelberg Materials Australia's national electricity demand. This created an opportunity to consider both commercial and environmental outcomes through the procurement process. 

Maintaining renewable electricity credentials was a key consideration throughout the process, alongside factors such as commercial requirements, contract flexibility and service. 

The agreement is expected to reduce our Scope 2 CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,800 tonnes per year, providing a measurable contribution to HMA's broader sustainability ambitions. This will be achieved by securing Large-Scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) from accredited sources to cover the electricity demand of all 125 sites.

This is a great outcome as we’ve secured a competitive renewable energy solution that aligns with our Scope 2 objectives and reinforces our commitment to operating more sustainably.

The initiative demonstrates how sustainability considerations can be embedded into purchasing decisions alongside operational and commercial requirements.
For Heidelberg Materials Australia, reducing environmental impact isn't limited to the materials we produce or the way our sites operate. Decisions in areas such as energy procurement can also contribute to reducing our operational emissions.
