A former Heidelberg Materials Management Development Program (MDP) graduate, he now plays a key role in the HSEQ team, applying the broad experience gained through the program to support safety and risk outcomes across the business.
How it started
What attracted you to the MDP at Heidelberg Materials?
My initial attraction to applying for the MDP program at HMA (Hanson Australia at the time) was because I was planning on moving from Adelaide to Melbourne and wanted to join a global business where I could start my career and eventually work internationally. I had also just finished my Masters in Applied Project Management and wanted to build experience in project and risk management. From what I had read about the program, it approached both in a holistic way that suited how I work.
Career highlights
What's been the most valuable part of your experience?
The scale of the business has taught me the true value of networking. I thought I was already strong in this area, but throughout the program and in my post-program role, I have developed this skill far more than expected. The program provides a strong balance of self-direction and support, which really encourages professional growth.
What types of projects or rotations have you been involved in?
In the Southern Region, the rotations are quite comprehensive, including HSEQ, Technical, Quarry Operations, Concrete Operations, Alex Fraser Asphalt, Sales, Logistics and Transport and Country Operations.
One major project I’ve led is the proximity detection project for pedestrians around heavy mobile equipment and fixed plant, which began in my second year and has continued into my current role.
Growth and development
How has the program supported your development and career goals?
It has supported my goals extremely well. In my initial interview, I shared that I wanted a career in project and risk management, and my current role as an HSEQ Advisor (Risk) aligns directly with that. The program gave me exposure across the business, strengthened my confidence and helped me build the technical skills required for my career path, including opportunities for further study and development.
Team and culture
How would you describe the culture at Heidelberg Materials?
In my experience, the business does a strong job of promoting leadership qualities. My studies have focused on the distinction between leadership and management and I can see this reflected in how senior leaders operate. This carries through to middle management and operational teams. In my current role, I work closely with many parts of the business and consistently see positive team cultures across sites.
Advice for future graduates
What advice would you give someone considering applying for the MDP?
For anyone coming straight from high school or university, the biggest adjustment is learning self-direction, responsibility and critical thinking.
The program is flexible and fast paced and you need to be able to guide yourself, understand the responsibility that comes with leadership and solve problems in real time. If you develop these skills early, you will do well in this business.
